Hey guys, about the tips posts

Hey guys. I know, it's Friday, which means I'm supposed to have another Tips post to share. Unfortunately, the truth is that I've been having a hard time with those lately. Which, is why there haven't been many popping up. I've been receiving a lot of requests to cover topics that are well beyond my abilities to explain. And, to be honest, that's made me more than a little uncomfortable.

While I'd like to be able to help, I never set out to be a teacher. This blog was intended as a place for me to share what I'm working on as well as what's happening in my life. Somewhere along the way I must have given the impression that I can teach. But I'm not a teacher, I'm still trying to learn myself.

I also go through phases. I'm currently in a "nesting" phase where I just want to burrow into the room, find fun things, move stuff around, sleep, and work. Usually during the summer I hit a "working" phase where I just want to focus on getting things done. And in the fall to mid winter I hit a "learning" phase where I'm more interested in picking up new skills and sharing what I learn. So right now, I'm not really in the mindset to do research or pick up new methods. I'm more interested in maintaining my materials and preparing for the summer workload.

In other words, I'm about as far from teaching mode as possible at the moment.

If my posts are helpful that's wonderful, but I'd prefer to pull back for a bit if that's okay. I'm sorry. Thanks guys.

Hi Darc!
Hey! If you feel the need to pull back from the Tips posts for a while that is certainly okay with me. I always considered those to be nice "bonus material" and I Thank You for them! You've certainly given me things to think about with those posts too! :-) Even the studio layout stuff was interesting.

But you've been doing this out of the kindness of your heart, and you should never have to feel like you're being pushed for something you don't have time or desire to do.

I enjoyed the tips you gave, though personally I don't think I'd ever be able to replicate it. Thanks for doing them. I'm sure you'll find something else to post instead of tips. Have a great day!

Thanks guys! I'm sorry about the tips posts. I'm never quite sure how I'm doing things - stuff just seems to work - so it's a little hard for me to break things down at times. I was also worrying that I might be coming across as uppity to people with degrees in art. If I don't have a degree in it, then what right do I have to teach it? I'll come up with other things, I'm just not sure quite what just yet.

Hey Darc,

First, it's always interesting to get a glimpse into the mindset of any creative person, whatever medium they work with.

Second, just because you don't have a degree doesn't mean you don't know what you are talking about. All a degree in anything really gives a person is the basic knowledge and some hands-on experience. It's the actual working in the field that gives the extra breadth of knowledge that experts, real experts, are known for.

Besides, originally to get the rank of a Master one had to work their way from apprentice upward. Being able to study allows people to jump over that apprentice stage and they can really be considered journeymen when they graduate, depending on how much actual hands-on experience they got. Otherwise they would be senior apprentices.

Third, I can't imagine you being uppity. Not unless someone got you angry. But simply in sharing your experiences with us? Nothing uppity in that at all. :)

Fourth, this is your blog. Only you have the right to determine what you post and how often you post. We appreciate the time and effort you go through to share your thoughts and experiences with us.

Thanks. I've run into a few too many "if you don't have a degree you've no right calling yourself an artist" types over the years, I guess. Part of me knows better, while the other part keeps thinking maybe they're right. Confidence, I need it. :P
